Metro 07/18/2014, Page A07 APPRECIATIONS WATERBURY Turnout for brother’s services was overwhelming Waterbury is known for a lot of “firsts” — the first Mickey Mouse watch, the first Girls Club in the United States, the first Catholic high school in Connecticut and more. Waterbury also is the birthplace of many noteworthy people, including actors, scientists, judges and athletes. What some of you may not know, and what my family was so overwhelmingly reminded of, is that Waterbury has one of the strongest communities around. To borrow a line from our good friend Debbie Cappa, “I have such an appreciation for the people from Waterbury. They are the kindest, most loving people.” Debbie hit the nail on the head when she conveyed those thoughts. Recently, my brother, Tommy Dorso Sr., was taken from this life at the early age of 61. He left behind his wife, three sons and three grandchildren, all of whom were his entire world. He also left his siblings and in-laws. My family already knew what an awesome person Tommy was, but little did we know that an entire community felt the same way! We were overwhelmed by the more than 2,000 people who stood in line for more than two hours — in 90-degree heat, sun, rain, thunder and lightning — at Murphy Funeral Home to pay their final respects. Hundreds more attended his funeral services at St. Leo the Great Church and All Saints Cemetery. We were equally in awe of the hundreds who visited our homes; sent food, cards, condolences and prayers; and literally transformed Facebook into my brother’s own personal dedication site. The outpouring of kindness to our entire family was truly humbling, and appreciated more than anyone will ever know, and will never be forgotten. Whether you knew Tommy from Washington Grammar School, Wilby High School, ice skating or playing Little League Baseball at Washington Park; hanging around Travers Canteen, playing softball, golfing, seeing him at his sons’ games and matches, placing a bet at Winners OTB; or just were lucky enough to have met him in passing, you knew how much he loved his family, Waterbury and this community. Most importantly, you learned what a phenomenal person he was. Words can never convey our true gratitude, nor can any of you know how you have touched our hearts, but thank you! If you saw the rainbow over my brother’s house or witnessed the lights go out at his wake, then you have to believe that in Tommy Dorso Sr. fashion, he was thanking you all, saying goodbye and reassuring us all that he is in a better place.
