The French authorities dont get to be all Je suis Charlie and claiming to stand up for free speech one minute, and then go and arrest people for so-called hate speech (a bullshit category) the next. Free speech for Charlie Hebdo means free speech for Dieudonné and everyone else, no exceptions - including apologists for last weeks shooting, loathsome though they may be. Criminalising speech isnt just outrageous from the point of view of political principle. Its also the worst thing you can do, if youre trying to get to grips with Islamism and address the estrangement of a significant minority of Muslims in Europe from the societies in which they live. The hypocrisy and insecurity of the French authorities is tragically obvious, not least to anyone already inclined to hold the norms and customs of mainstream Western society in contempt. Own goal doesnt begin to cover it.
