Mexican Independence Day! Independence from just exactly what? My beloved E, a Mexican, says nothing to celebrate! I agree. He says unless you want to celebrate the narco state, corruption from top to bottom (bye, Salma!), starvation wages, too many kids, no jobs, pedophile priests in charge of educating the young, lousy schools, poor nutrition (thank you, Coke!), a criminal health care system that forces you to wait endlessly just for an appointment to see a bureaucrat to make an appointment to make an appointment to see a doctor, environmental disaster (our nation is buried under plastic garbage), raw sewage and heavy metals in the water, plagues of insects and diseases that ruin entire harvests (seen many avocados lately?), mistreatment of animals of every species, communications of every sort controlled by a lackey media and a multi-billionaire, homophobia and misogyny rampant, child and elder care nonexistent, soaring inequality, and this is just skimming the surface. E says Independence from España seems like a silly thing to celebrate. Shortly thereafter the people of this country underwent the theft of over half the nation´s territory by the behemoth of the north (and the great sucking sound northwards continues to this day). But, hell, give them bread and circuses and a battlefield full of pyrotechnics, and everyone is happy. Really? Happy? This is not independence. Viva Mexico, the real Mexico! The one I dearly love.
