Meyiwa’s funeral moves to bigger venue DURBAN — Senzo Meyiwa’s funeral has been moved to the larger Moses Mabhida Stadium from the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi. Mpumalanga Black Aces, who will be playing AmaZulu on Saturday in Durban, mentioned on their twitter handle that their Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash had been moved from the Moses Mabhida Stadium to Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, north of Durban. PSL spokesman Lux September confirmed that the venues had been switched for the clubs to make way for the funeral. But all the other PSL fixtures scheduled for Saturday and Sunday would go ahead as planned, with each game having a moment of silence before kick-off. A top-level meeting was held late yesterday to confirm the final details of the funeral, but no statement had been issued at the time of going to print. There will be a special train leaving for the funeral from Umlazi station at 8.15am on Saturday morning. Meyiwa will be laid to rest at the Chesterville Heroes’ Acre. The slain Orlando Pirates goalkeeper’s father, Samuel Meyiwa, left KwaZulu-Natal for Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon to collect his son’s belongings. On Wednesday, Meyiwa Snr again reiterated that singer Kelly Khumalo, Senzo’s girlfriend, was not welcome at his son’s funeral. However, it was not clear whether Khumalo, who has a 10-month-old daughter by Senzo, would be allowed to attend Thursday’s memorial service at the Standard Bank Arena. There will be another memorial service at the L-section grounds, which the Umlazi Football Association has organised. The family’s memorial service will be held in Durban’s City Hall on Friday morning. Activity outside the Meyiwa household was quieter on Wednesday, though MECs Weziwe Thusi and Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha spent the best part of the day at the home. The African National Congress Women’s League and the National Freedom Party also made appearances. Officials from the Department of Health were at the house with blood pressure equipment, apparently to keep watch over Senzo’s mother, Ntombifuthi, who had to be taken to hospital on Monday. Meanwhile, the SA Football Association on Wednesday postponed the Bafana Bafana squad announcement — scheduled for Thursday morning — and will instead attend Meyiwa’s memorial service. Bafana coach Ephraim Shakes Mashaba was expected to name a 26-man squad to take on Sudan and Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month, but has delayed doing so following the shock death of the national team and Orlando Pirates skipper. A new date for the squad announcement is yet to be confirmed, but Mashaba still has ample time to name his team for the clash against Sudan on November 15 at Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium and the Super Eagles away from home in their final Group A match four days later. From our point of view, we felt it would be insensitive to carry on with the announcement before Senzo is laid to rest on Saturday. As a result, we decided to postpone the press conference, said Safa spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi. We also wanted to be part of this joint memorial service with Boxing SA, Athletics SA and SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee at the Standard Bank Arena. With Mazola Molefe
