Mica on Black Irid. Here’s an interesting way to use mica powder. A design was sandblasted onto black iridescent glass – just enough to remove the metallic coating and expose uncoated black glass. The stencil was removed and gold mica sprinkled onto the glass. Because mica will fuse to where the irid was removed but not to the still irid coated parts of the glass, there’s no need to worry about where the mica is dispensed. Fire to tack fuse. Mica in contact with the glass will have fused to wherever it had been sandblasted but not anywhere else. Also, any mica on top of other mica will not have fused. Brush off any loose mica and put it back into the original container to use in other projects. It works the same with dichroic that has been sandblasted. Mica will fuse to wherever the dichro has been removed but not to any surface still dichro coated. Michelle (Frosty) Frost will be demonstrating this, along with lots of other cool mica techniques, in her Mica Magic glass in Las Vegas
