Michaëlle Jean: Candidate for Secretary General of La Francophonie • Committed to the French language The French language brings together peoples from five continents and constitutes the pillar and foundation of La Francophonie. With its universal outreach, the French language represents a powerful tool for cultural development, diplomacy and economic development. Michaëlle Jean plans to stay the course toward expanding the influence of French, valuing cultural diversity in the digital age. She will encourage a greater focus on teaching French from a very young age. She plans to strengthen the role of French in international, continental and regional organizations, by helping to promote the Vade-mecum relatif à l’usage de la langue française dans les organisations internationales [guide on the use of the French language in international organizations]. At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Michaëlle Jean showed determination in successfully carrying out her mission as Grand témoin de la Francophonie, assigned to her by Abdou Diouf, Secretary General of La Francophonie. Michaëlle Jean will make the promotion of the French language a key focus of her term in office.
