Michele asked, I am looking for suggestions and help with teaching - TopicsExpress

Michele asked, I am looking for suggestions and help with teaching my 11-year-old daughter (5th grade). She is an auditory learner. She is struggling to retain information, especially in grammar and math, and is very frustrated with herself. We use BJU English 5 and even with lots of practice and review, she has a hard time identifying the parts of sentence, parts of speech, etc. She is a very reluctant reader and prefers me reading to her than picking up a book herself. She does not like to write and is a terrible speller. Remembering math facts and concepts has always been difficult for her. This year we switched from A Beka math to Teaching Textbooks 5, which has helped a lot; however, she has a hard time remembering concepts from lesson to lesson. For instance, we will do 20-25 practice problems on reducing fractions until she seems to totally get it. The next day I will give her a fraction to reduce and she looks at it like it is Greek. Has anyone had similar experiences and found ways to help their child? She is frustrated because she cant learn anything, and I am frustrated because I cant figure out how to help her. My friend has very similar issues with her daughter and is befuddled as well. We are wondering if this is some type of a processing issue, but dont know where to begin to look for answers. THANK YOU!
