Michele challenged me to list my 10 most influential books. 1. The Berenstain Bears Too Much Vacation by Jan & Stan Berenstain - my dad, read to me every night. We have literally Collect[ed] Them All. Also The Monster at the End of this Book - only the one featuring Furry lovable old Grover. It was one of my favorite books as a child and thus made it fun to read. 2. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin - one of the very first whodunit books I read and it hooked me. I of course loved the patriotic ending even as a young grade school kid. There was a diverse group of people that all had things in common when you look deeper. I have re-read this book several times. 3. Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Save Queen of Sheba by Louise Moeri, Banner in the Sky by James Ramsey Ullman and Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott ODell - My mom also happened to by my 5th grad teachers. Everyday after recess she would read out loud to the class while we did a craft of some kind. These were just a few of the books she read. She even built her own library for her students to check books out to read. 4. Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery - by mom, Susan Cassidy, LOVED reading and one summer we read almost all of the Anne of Green Gables series out load, switching off on each chapter. I have always wanted to finish the series but since Momma passed I have not been able to even entertain the idea. 5. He Loves Me Not by Caroline B Cooney - This is not the first Cooney book I read but it is one of my very favorites! The girl is a musician in high school and her friends always think she is too busy to hang out with them. However, she keeps following her passion. It is not always easy but she finds a place to fit in, friends that share her interests. It gave me hope that I would one day also find a place to fit in. I also started to collect every Cooney book I could find. She was famous for The Face on the Milk Carton series but I also love Forbidden, Tune In Anytime, her Time Traveler series, and Dont Blame the Music 6. When Calls the Heart by Janette Oke - This was the first Christian fiction book I ever read and I was hooked!! This is an amazing story of a strong woman who left her life to help others. I also highly suggest The Measure of a Heart After being exposed to Christian Fiction I also found Lori Wick (Bamboo & Lace and The Rescuer) and Gilbert Morris - white historical Christian fiction. 7. The Protector & True Honor by Dee Henderson a Christian fiction author who adds romance suspense and mystery into every story. I LOVE her stuff! There are two main series she has the OMalley Series and Uncommon Heroes The Protector was the 4th in the OMalley Series which is about a group of 7 orphans who band together to create their own family. Each has a high risk job and must face their fears as they find their relationship with the Lord. True Honor I have read and reread at least 10 times. It is about a former CIA operative and a Navy Seal who work together to bring the terrorist from September 11th to justice. 8. The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli & Second Treatise of Government by John Locke, and Night by Elie Wiesel - All three of the books were assigned for studies. All three have helped to shape my political views. 9. Mr. Churchills Secretary by Susan Elia MacNeal - not only is this a great historical fiction series with strong female lead set in WWII but it was the first audiobook I ever read and have become an audiobook junkie ever since and has allowed me to experience so many books I never would have been able to physically read. 10. The Bible - the ultimate story of humanity and as it says nothing new under the sun there also the book by which all others are based on.
