Michigan public school teachers and their supporters are organizing a demonstration on Wednesday in Lansing at the Michigan State Capitol at 11:30am to raise awareness of threats to public education in Michigan and demand free, quality public schools for Michigan students. The fight against corporate education reform has been picking up across the country. Last summer the Chicago Teachers Union, led by the rank-and-file reform caucus the Caucus of Rank-and-File Educators (CORE) organized a massive strike that beat back the Chicago machine headed by Mayor Rahm "1%" Emmanuel. The strike has had the effect of encouraging others across the country to resist the education reformers. In Seattle, public school teachers won a boycott against standardized testing. In Michigan, teachers from several school districts shut down their schools with a sick-out in order to protest right-to-work legislation. And last winter teachers at Ceasar Chavez Academy voted overwhelmingly to affiliate with the American Federation of Teachers--making it the first charter school in the state to go union. This is a critical issue gaining the spot light across the country. Legal observing at this demonstration is a great way to show your support for these teachers in their fight against corporate education reform, to defend their right to organize, and stand up for schools that Michigan students deserve! If you can legal observe this Wednesday at 11:30am in Lansing, please contact Aaron at [email protected]. Thank you.
