Microsoft Windows and Licensing Questions and Answers Every now and then I’m asked if I can install Windows on someone’s machine. My response is always, “Sure if you provide me with your disk I’d be happy to install Windows on your computer.” Microsoft Windows requires a license with a matching product key in order to run on any computer. This means you have to have purchased a copy of Windows legally somewhere in order for someone to be able to install it. Q: “I dont have the disk that came with my computer, Windows was on there when I bought it.” A: Most name brand PC’s ship with Windows pre-installed on them. There is a recovery partition on the hard drive, which stores your copy of Windows for that computer. Q: “I had Windows on my computer and I don’t see why you can’t give me a copy.” A: The version of Windows that was pre-installed on your computer by the manufacturer is usually covered by the manufacturer, and the licensing terms that you agreed to. Microsoft will not give you a free copy of Windows because your hard drive stopped working. The manufacturer may replace it if the machine is still covered by their warranty. Q: “My computer died and I need windows re-installed on my computer.” A: Unfortunately if your PC is out of warranty the manufacturer will charge you a small fee to have a Disks or a USB flash drive sent to you with the version of Windows and all other software that was installed on your machine by them. If it is under warranty they will usually provide you with this free of charge. Q: “ I would like Windows 8.1, and I have Windows 7.” A: Not a problem, Windows 8.1 can be bought for about $86.00 to $132.00. Q: “The last technician gave me a free copy of Windows, why won’t you?” A: I’m sorry to say but you must be unaware that you most likely do not have a legal coy of Windows on your computer. No technician is authorized to hand out free copies of Windows.
