Microsoft phone scam!!! Just got a call from a guy with a middle eastern accent named Michael. He said he was calling from Microsoft to follow up on some error messages my computer was sending their servers. I got a call like this a few weeks ago and was somewhat polite- although it seemed weird, I wasnt sure it was a scam. I did some research and found that the 202 and 201 (New Jersey) area codes are commonly used by scammers in foreign countries. The most recent call was from a 425 area code, which is in Washington. I wasnt as polite this evening when I talked to Michael. I said Did you know that this area code is commonly used by people in middle eastern countries to make fraudulent phone calls? he said My name is Michael, I am calling from Microsoft in New Jersey I responded by telling him I dont believe your name is Michael. I dont believe you are calling from Microsoft and I dont believe you are in New Jersey. He said ok and hung up, so he is either a very confused Microsoft tech support guy or he was trying to scam me. Anyway.....scams like this work or they wouldnt do it, so I thought I would give you all a heads up with the hopes that none of you fall victim. From what I understand they call and tell you that you PC is sending them error messages. They want to guide you through a fix by having you do a couple of things on your PC. Then once they say it is fixed they let you know you owe them a ton of money and give you instructions on how to pay via a Pay Pal account. microsoft/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx
