Middle Island Creek harbors endangered mussels also. It is considered to be extremely important habitat, especially since the total kill of native mussels and other aquatics in 40+ miles of Dunkard creek in 2009 from mine drainage and marcellus gas drilling waste water dumping. Mussels especially important as they filter many contaminants in the water and are excellent allies by helping to keep water clean before drinking water is taken in for human consumption. One big chemical spill or dumping of "processed water" could wipe out our mussels for good.
