Midland, TX 9/11 remembrance events -- The Midland County Republican Women is meeting 11:30 a.m. today at the Petroleum Club. The program will be a 9/11 tribute to first responders. Guests include Police Chief Price Robinson, Sheriff Gary Painter, Fire Chief Robert Isbell and Midland City Council candidates Sharla Hotchkiss, Spencer Robnett, J. Ross Lacy and Michael Trost. Speaker will be Heidi Cruz, wife of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, who was working at the White House on Sept. 11, 2001. For more information visit mcrw.us. -- H-E-B will honor our nation’s firefighters for their dedication and selfless service during the ninth annual Helping Heroes community service program. More than five Midland H-E-B volunteers will visit the local fire station and personally thank firefighters by delivering a home-cooked meal and helping with various clean up and maintenance tasks, such as yard work, station cleaning and washing fire trucks. The Helping Heroes community initiative allows H-E-B Partners to commemorate the heroism of civil servants throughout the state while celebrating local heroes who risk their lives every day to protect the community. This community project also honors Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance that pays tribute to the rescue teams who risked and lost their lives at the World Trade Center. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today at Midland Fire Department, 3301 Haynes Avenue. - Midland College invites the public to a special 9/11 ceremony before the Lady Chaps volleyball match today at Chap Center. Prior to the first serve against Frank Phillips College, MC will observe a moment of silence and recognize all first responders and members of the military, active and retired. The pre-game observance begins at 6:45 p.m., with the match starting at 7 p.m. All first responders in uniform and their families, as well as active and retired military in uniform or with ID and their families, will be admitted to the game free. The pre-game ceremonies will include presentation of colors by the Midland High School Air Force Junior ROTC. MISD events South Elementary: Teachers will incorporate lessons about heroes, students will write letters to local first responders, classes will decorate doors, and Counselor David Cook will visit classes to make presentations throughout the week. Bowie Fine Arts Academy: The school will observe a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., and a student will read a patriotic poem to the student body Bush Elementary: A flag-pole ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m.. First responders are invited; sixth-grade students will read poems, and they will also conduct readings throughout the day; teachers will incorporate special instructional activities throughout the day. Carver Center: Students will wear red, white and blue and a school-wide assembly will be held in the auditorium at 8:30 a.m. Boy Scout students will lead the flag ceremony and pledge, a brief presentation will be given and PTA will provide memorial stickers to wear. Fannin Elementary: Students will participate in a flag ceremony and will honor first responders in the school courtyard at 8:15 a.m. Henderson Elementary: An announcement will be given about the significance of the day, and a moment of silence will be observed Lee High School: Students In Philanthropy students will place flags in the school flowerbed near the flag pole at 8 a.m. and at 8:15 a.m. the Student Council president will begin the flag-pole ceremony which includes the LHS Band’s playing of “Taps.” Students will be given red, white and blue ribbons in first period, and social studies classes will have special lessons throughout the day Parker Elementary: Students will participate in a 20-minute program at the school flag pole and honor first responders at 8:15 a.m. Rusk Elementary: Students will participate in a flag-pole ceremony at 8:30 a.m.
