Midwives view pregnancy and birth as a normal physiological - TopicsExpress

Midwives view pregnancy and birth as a normal physiological process. The World Health Organisation recognises midwives as the most “appropriate primary health care provider to be assigned to the care of normal birth” (WHO 1996). Our role is to ensure mothers and families are well supported and prepared with confidence to grow, birth and raise a child. Birth for every woman is a unique body/mind, experience and there will always be a need for kind caring around birth, no matter how easy or difficult, natural or technological. Continuity of care with a known midwife has shown benefits for women and babies with less birth intervention, less need for pain relief, higher likelihood of normal birth and higher likelihood of breast feeding success (Hatem, Sandall, Devane, Solani & Gates 2009). Do you think continuity of care is valid? Has continuity of care been part of your birth experience? How can we all work together to make this an equitable option for all women?
