"Migrating Dignity" My parents the new migrants Negotiated - TopicsExpress

"Migrating Dignity" My parents the new migrants Negotiated available urban spaces Equipping me with a city savvy An armor against daily indignities Stomping out any trait That might render me vulnerable To forces that held them down And generations before them. A deep unsaid desire to see their children Live in dignity, though rootless! Now, I am a new migrant In a country far from home I find myself searching For signs of discrimination My alertness a honed skill I draw from generations of migrant ancestors Who moved away from loved homes In search of that elemental human desire A deep unsaid need to see my children Live in dignity, in an alien land? No. I am done hiding behind a city-gloss. I am done escaping, I want dignity for my ancestors I am done searching, I want it in their village homes I am done migrating, I want it for all future Dalit migrants I am getting back. I am getting it all back. ~Anu Ramdas
