But try getting out of it, and you might end up feeling like Michael Corleone in “The Godfather 3.” They just keep pulling you back in! That’s what happened to Lesli Hill of Missouri. When her high-risk pool policy was canceled, she turned to the Obamacare exchange to buy another one. But then, she discovered a better plan elsewhere for less money. She figured since she hadn’t paid yet, it should be a snap to terminate her Obamacare plan. Guess again. She called the help line, got put on hold for hours every day, and when she finally reached an operator, they only knew how to sign people up, not how to cancel a plan. She thought it was finally canceled, but then she was charged for the premium. So she started calling again, only to be told that cancellations were handled by a special department, but they weren’t allowed to give its phone number to the public. After writing to all her elected representatives, she finally got in her car and drove to Kansas City to talk to her insurer. They finally got the policy canceled. Lesli said it consumed six weeks of her life and was like falling into a parallel universe. But then, you can’t exactly blame the government for being reluctant to let her go. If you’d spent over $600 million on a website alone and attracted that few customers, you might say “No refunds!” too.
