Mike Hulett Candidate for Mayor City of Moorhead "Return to Center" “Center of Housing – Center of Business - Center of Energy” - A Plan to Revitalize Downtown Moorhead - o Today I am calling on Homebuilders, developers, realtors, bankers, the Moorhead City Council, and the citizens of Moorhead and to get behind a comprehensive plan to rebuild and re-energize downtown Moorhead. o I am calling on our legislators to initiate new legislation, proven successful in other cities, that will provide Minnesota border cities with the ability to designate “special opportunity zones” for revitalized housing and business through the provision of 5 years of complete property tax relief plus other appropriate incentives. o Let’s focus first on 25 designated blocks along and near Center Avenue to make them the anchor for housing and business in a revitalized, re-energized downtown Moorhead. o We can fill in around the many great downtown businesses and restaurants that are already a place to shop and dine for students and other residents living downtown – and they will have the opportunity to grow as well. o Let’s focus on the education community! With 15,000+ students a few blocks away in Moorhead and 14,000+ more just across the river, what better location exists for student housing, above and among small retails stores. o Downtown Moorhead has parks, trails, and river green spaces available for biking, roller-blading, walking and relaxation - perfect for residents of any age! What better place could there be for students and working people to live, shop, meet, and socialize? This will be a “work in progress” that will clearly encourage further housing and business development in adjacent areas. We can “Return to Center” by providing places, spaces and more housing downtown that attract students, visitors, and residents, young and old. We can meet our often stated goals of retaining Moorhead businesses while adding many more, plus building more housing, thus making Moorhead an even better place to work and play and call home! This is something we can do! This is a vision for the years ahead that can succeed!
