Militants switch over to new modes of communication JAMMU, June 28 (KNN): Militants have started using highly sophisticated modes of communication to avoid their interception by the security agencies for keeping in touch with their colleagues both within the State and across the Line of Control (LoC) i.e. Pakistan and PoK. According to official sources and Intelligence inputs, the militants have been using modern equipments instead of relying on Cell phones, which were easily intercepted by most of the security agencies and helped the latter in tracing their movement. “The militants were now in possession of Global Positioning System (GPS), Thoraya phones, satellite telephone sets and were also relying upon VoIP (Voice over Internet Telephone). They were also using coded messages on social networking sites to inter-act with each other,’’ they said. They added that security agencies have come across the sophisticated equipments used by the militants especially those holding rank of the commanders for communication with their associates within the State as well as the neighbouring country of Pakistan. “The militants have lowered the use of Cell phones to talk and convey messages as they were aware that if their number was with security or Intelligence agencies and police, it would be intercepted,’’ sources said but added that some lower ranking militants including the Over Ground Workers (OGWs) continued to use mobile telephones but by frequently changing their numbers. They said the mobile telephones were also in use in large number but the militants have been taking extra ordinary precautions by using them. They not only frequently change the mobile numbers and the companies but also the locations to avoid getting intercepted and arrested, they added. Sources admitted that a number of militants were in possession of GPS, Thoraya and satellite telephones in the State. Use of net phone through VoIP was also a new phenomenon, which has come from the West. The induction of educated youths into the militancy could see the militants more often using new modes of communication including the VoIP. A senior Army Commander had recently admitted that the militants were resorting to new methods of communication to avoid getting intercepted. “Our mechanism is well in place. We have taken steps to counter this new communication threat from the militants,’’ sources said but admitted that the security agencies were yet to find a way out of tackling use of new communication methods by the militants. Sources said some militants in possession of mobile telephones generally keep them switched off for days together to avoid their location getting traced by the Intelligence agencies. They switch on the phone only for few seconds, inter-act with militants and then again switched off them. Some of the fresh infiltrators, intercepted by security forces on the LoC, have also been found in possession of sophisticated modes of communication in addition to arms, ammunition and explosives, sources confirmed.
