Military narrows operations to Chibok girls’ location TROOPS fighting insurgency in the North-East have narrowed their operations to the spot where the over 200 Chibok girls are being held hostage. Informed military sources disclosed in Abuja that the operations had been narrowed to the Sambisa forest, “as there is no going out or coming in to the area, with the military activities all centered there.” The source revealed that the military was already on top of the situation, as various information had been gathered and being analysed. It was reliably gathered that the pressure on the insurgent group was mounting every hour, as they may be forced to release the girls in order to avoid confrontation with the troops. Also, the source said aerial surveillance was being carried out intermittently to avoid the girls being moved out of the forest. However, the source added that the insurgents carrying out indiscriminate attacks on villages in Borno were those who crossed from Cameroun borders to Nigeria. The top military source disclosed that all the major camps of the insurgents in Borno State had been destroyed, a reason they were relocating to Bauchi State. Nigerian Tribune also gathered that the Air Force had been bombing the forest in Bauchi State on a daily basis, so that they could not regroup and build camps there. In a related development, the Nigeria Air Force has reacted to the story that its unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which could have been used by the government to locate the girls, had not flown. Nigerian Air Force spokesman, Air Commodore Yusuf Anas, said there was the need to put the record straight. According to him, the Nigeria Air Force, after several years of research and development efforts, was able to produce the first indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle, nicknamed “Gulma.” Anas noted that the achievement was unveiled to the public by President Goodluck Jonathan on December 17, 2013 at the Nigerian Air Force base in Kaduna. He said that it was imperative to state that what was unveiled by the president was just a prototype, as full scale production was still ongoing.
