Mind-Body Medicine: How Does It Work? When a person is emotionally and physically stressed, his body releases hormones, affecting all his organ and systems. Say for an instance, anxiety and hostility-related stress can cause heart disruptions and immune functions. There are also certain types of emotions that are associated to certain types of diseases. Say for example, having the attitude of being hostile increase your chances of developing coronary heart disease, insulin resistance, obesity, abnormal cholesterol levels, low LDL and high triglycerides. However, there is no scientific evidence that supports that negative emotions can lead to certain kinds of diseases. However, scientific studies show that negative emotions and being stressed can be unhealthy to the body. In fact, a study has proven that a person who is unconsciously defensive or has stifling feelings can result to medical problems like high blood pressure. This is also a condition which is highly associated to hopelessness. A person’s way of dealing with his emotions can or may affect his chances of surviving a chronic illness.
