“Mind the Gap” This is a phrase printed at the platforms of many train stations in London to remind of the short space between the platform and the train before we board. This phase took on another sobering meaning when reflecting on our relationships with those around us. To me, “mind the gap” means being mindful our proximity to our unique set of people that God has placed in our lives. What does the Word say? “ Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.” Ephesians 5:5-6 Regarding those He has placed in our circle of influence let us be challenged today to seek opportunities to listen and to share our testimonies and importantly, the gospel of Jesus Christ. I am finding that there are two ways to live this life: One, as if everything that happens is random. Two, as if everything that happens is God-ordained and therefore has a purpose. If every interaction is God ordained let us look to “make the most of every opportunity” even when that means stepping outside of our comfort zone, reaching out despite feeling fearful and making time to be a friend to a stranger or cancelling our all important plans and making time to meet up with a co-worker, coursemate, stranger or relative. So is it our responsibility as Christians to ensure people accept the gospel? What does the Word say? “What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. 7So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.” 1 Corinthians 3:6 I believe that if as we live a Christ-centered life and challenge ourself to “mind the gap” we will make use of the opportunities we have to show Christ’s love to and share of our time and resources with those who have been placed in our life for the moment. Then we will put into practice the great commission and our responsibility given to each of us as Christians by Jesus himself. “He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Mark 16:15 We must be ever mindful that every interaction is God ordained and we truly do not know what tomorrow holds as tomorrow is not promised to any of us. “Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15-16
