Minds In Motion is on the journey to China with the professional company! MIM teaching artists spent last week exploring the styles and intricacies of Chinese dance! Yu Xiao, who trained at the Beijing Dance Academy (also where Richmond Ballet’s guest choreographer Ma Cong trained!) taught our teaching artists many aspects of both classical and folk Chinese dance. MIM teaching artists will utilize Yu Xiao’s teaching in their Minds In Motion curriculum and choreography this year to connect local 4th graders to the stories and movements of China! Teaching artists learned the arm and hand placement and positions required in classical Chinese dance, how to use props such as fans, water sleeves and swords, as well as the folk dances of Mongolia, Uyghur, and Dai regions! Here is a video of MIM Teaching Artists Cat Studdard, Jordan Glunt, Emily Poff, Paul Dandridge, Lily Mochary, Caitlin Lennon, and Amanda Liscouski learning the arm, head, and hand positions of classical Chinese dance with Yu Xiao!
