Minister advises moderation during feasts so as to cut down on solid waste ---- - Malaysia is not bad. Not only are we fattest in ASEAN but we throw away a lot of food too - A staggering 45% or 14,850 tonnes of solid waste daily is apparently food-related - we have also exceeded expectations as the amount of rubbish we generate is 7 years ahead of schedule. --- Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan has urged Malaysians to avoid feasting guests to reduce solid waste which is increasing daily. This must be done although enjoying food has become a Malaysian culture. Fete your guests but do it with moderation as unwanted food usually ends up in landfills, he told reporters after launching National Recycling Day 2013 today. Based on the Composition and Solid Waste Study 2012, the amount of solid waste generated in Malaysia stood at 33,000 tonnes daily. Of the total, food waste accounted for 45% or 14,850 tonnes, plastic garbage (42.9%/14,157 tonnes) and disposable diapers (12.1%/3,993 tonnes ). Abdul Rahman said the 33,000 tonnes solid waste daily is cause for concern as it is the governments target for 2020 but it has been reached seven years earlier. ---- themalaysianinsider/malaysia/article/minister-advises-moderation-during-feasts-so-as-to-cut-down-on-solid-waste
