Kids Corner “Your children will be like olive shoots around your table” (Psalm 128:3b NIV) Our God does not play with words. When He likened children to olive plants, He has a picture in mind, sacred, strong and valuable persons. That is how He sees them, ‘like olive shoots.’ The olive is a very valuable tree. The olive tree and its fruit are the source of olive oil. We all know what olive oil is used for. It is nutritional and used for cooking. But more importantly, it is used to anoint kings and also for priestly or royal offices. The branch of the olive tree is said to be a symbol of abundance. For God to have likened children to the olive plant, it appears to me that He sees them as a valuable entity meant to be cherished and protected. It was said that the fruits of the olive tree and young olive trees are protected from decay or waste so that when the main olive tree is no more, it can be easily replaced for continuity because of its importance. “Thy children around your table as fresh and promising as young olive shoots” (Psalm 138:3b. The Message Bible). Protect them! If children are so valuable and important to our father God so much that of all the plants He created, He likened them to this sacred and evergreen tree, how much more should we, the care-taker. God chose us to take care of these His valuable assets! Little wonder then that He likened them to arrows in the hand of the warrior “Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth” (Psalm 127:4). Our children are meant to be loved, cherished and protected. They are God’s heritage. They deserve our best! To God, they represent strength. He said “They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court” (Psalm 127:5b). If our children must fulfill this very purpose of God for their lives, they need us to help them lay the foundation. We need to train them in the way of the Lord, pray for them and above all, model for them. Children learn by example. “Train up a child in the way he should go; And when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Children are the future of a family, a nation and even the church of God! We are a product of our upbringing, either way. But no matter how we were brought up, we can do better for our children through the help of God. Let us come together as parents to build or re-build this very foundation of a greater tomorrow, to take care of this very important aspect of God’s creation. Children are so very important to God that He cursed whoever gives them a hard time! “Better to wear a millstone necklace and take a swim in the deep sea than give even one of these dear little ones a hard time!” (Luke 17:2). Confession I choose to glorify God in my role as a parent. I choose to live a godly life before my children. I am sensitive to the needs of my children. I have God’s wisdom and discernment concerning how my decisions affect their lives. I am loving, caring, and compassionate toward my children. I will be steadfast and resolute regarding my convictions and will do my best to model the life of a godly parent before my kids. I will be faithful to pray for my children. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I will do my best to mentor and instruct them in the truth and principles of God’s Word.(Culled from Scripture Confessions Collection by Harrison House).
