Ministry of Human Rights and United Nations office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (#OHCHR)in coordination with Embassy of the #Netherlands in Yemen organized an event celebrating #Human Rights Day. In the event which was attended by Yemen’s Prime minister, Minister of human rights, Netherlands Ambassador,(OHCHR) country director and UN permanent representative, Prime Minister Khaled Bahhah stated that opening an office of high Commissioner for Human Rights in Yemen as the third office in the Arab region underscores Yemen’ s commitment with international human rights mechanisms to protect the rights of Yemenis. it also underlines Yemens readiness to work together with international partners to halt Human rights violations.“We cannot talk about a reality which respects human rights without removing the obstacles which hinders the participation of women in all spheres of life where Yemeni women are considered the solution rather than a problem, women are to be granted a prominent role in determining the goals and means of development”. Bahhah said. He also mentioned that the government is expecting the national strategy for human rights prepared by Human rights Ministry to be announced in the next 90 days. Prime minister highlighted OHCHR’s initiative in declaring joint human rights award by OHCHR and human rights ministry to be annually dedicated to a Yemeni human rights defender through an independent nomination committee. He valued this year award which was dedicated to the late Yemeni human rights defender Abdulmalik Almutawakil . Minister of human rights who also delivered a speech, stated that the government has taken the initiative to conduct the coming Human Rights day celebrations each year in one of the Yemeni governorates. In his speech, Ambassador of the kingdom of the Netherlands in #Yemen mentioned that human rights are the corner stone of human rights dignity, freedom and development. He stated. “There is no democracy, or rule of law if human rights are not defended”. “To defend human rights is a moral and legal obligation”. #Netherlands will continue supporting all efforts to protect human rights, and maintain security and justice all over the world.
