Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training in conjunction with YTEPP recently hosted Professor Sugata Mintra to officially open Public Access Learning Systems (PALS) placed at Sea Lots and the Rochard Douglas Presbyterian Primary School in Barrackpore. The system has also been launched in other communities such as Valencia, San Rafael, Cedros, Marabella, Talparo and Charloteville in Tobago. Professor Mitra is best known for his “Hole in the Wall” experiment, upon which PALS is based, which he conspired in his role as Chief Scientist at National Institute Information Technology at New Delhi, India in 1999. The software used is Activity Based e-Learning and the Systems are modeled after the concept of Minimal Invasion Education where children learn computer skills incidentally with minimal guidance, and even instruct each other. Blink bmobile provides free Internet Access to these systems, which are administered and controlled at YTEPP headquarters. (Photos via YTEPP and ytepp.gov.tt)
