Miramichi online received the following letter from Bob Bruce in response to an announcement by NBCC that the school would be merging the Police Foundations program with the Criminal Justice to create one new program. The decision is becase of a huge overlap in courses. The move will reduce the number of seats by 8, and will also result in the layoff of teachers who had been teaching in the Police Foundations program. Layoffs will be done by seniority. From: Sgt. Bob Bruce, MPF Student Coordinator I have been actively involved with the NBCC Police Foundation Course since it was implemented 10 years ago. I and other officers at the MPF have developed a tremendous partnership with the course instructors and the annual influx of police foundation students. Each year of this two year course has seen the partnership between Police Foundations and the MPF grow and further development. This partnership includes officer presentations, student involvement with Community events such as Downtown foot patrol projects, attendance at various festivals, crowd and traffic control at the annual Parade of Lights, joint attendance at Remembrance Day Services and joint Community fund raising activities. Our 2014 yearend report shows that MPF officers made over twenty five visits to this program during the past school year. The MPF has also taken on students during each year of the program for an eight week, on the job, training period. Some of these placements have led to students going on to the Atlantic Police Academy, the RCMP, or with other police forces. We also have past NBCC graduates working as officers with the MPF. I have seen the Police Foundation course to be recognized not only within our Province but by other Provinces as well. I have fielded calls from Police recruiters from Atlantic Canada, Alberta and from Quebec. There are graduated Police Foundation students working as officers in each of these Provinces. One of this year’s graduating students is from Montreal. A RCMP recruiter recommended to her to take the NBCC Miramichi Police Foundation program. Annually members of the MPF met with college staff to review our partnership and to make improvement suggestions. These suggestions have resulted in the implementation of student uniforms. enhanced placement opportunities and increased officer involvements during the school year. It now saddens me to learn that this much recognized program is coming to an end and also that some of the instructors who have worked so hard to develop partnerships with the MPF and with these students might have their jobs terminated. It is the instructors who made this program what it is. Although the NBCC has indicated that this course is merging with another program, much is unknown. I am concerned about the future of this program and that its MPF partnership might be coming to an end. This with be a loss, not only to us, but also to this Community.
