Mirik residents hopeful of tourism reviving with normalcy returning DEEP PRADHAN, MIRIK, 11 Sep 2013: Tourists began trickling into Mirik today following the GJAC’s announcement on Tuesday to suspend the strike til October 20. However, things tensed up a bit in the afternoon following news of the arrest of Darjeeling Chamber of Commerce president BM Garg. But business establishments in Mirik remain closed on Wednesdays, and even though traders across the hills closed down in protest of the arrest, most businesses here did not require to be asked to down their shutters. The boating facility however, was closed leaving visitors who had come for a boat ride disappointed. Most visitors whom this correspondent interacted with today felt an environment of uncertainty should not prevail in a place renowned for tourism. Meanwhile, hoteliers of town said calling off the strike would bring business back on track, with taxi drivers also hopeful of the same. Mirik residents, most of whom depend on tourism, fear it would be difficult to make ends meet if the shutdowns resume, especially when the festive and peak tourist seasons are just around the corner. eoi
