Miserere is Latin for Have Mercy. It’s fascinating to think that Allegri composed this piece for two separate choirs: one of four boy soprano voices, the other of five castrati. Today there are no more castrati, but there are so-called endocrinological castrati who are born with hormonal anomalies such as Kallmanns syndrome. We Southerners use the term “have mercy” on a regular basis, yet not necessarily to convey a sincere concern felt for your spiritual salvation. Southern colloquial expressions are often multifarious, bless your heart. Still I find this piece very beautiful and wanted to share. youtu.be/IA88AS6Wy_4
