Miss Miles who taught 2A - the same class for over 30 years. Friday afternoon was plant day when we would water our own tree we had planted. I think she went onto to win an award for best school garden in NSW. She was a witch- shed hit you with a feather duster or ruler if you got anything wrong but jeez you soon learnt your spelling and times tables. The thick scent of Peppercorn trees and flowering jasmine in summertime always reminds me of Cobar. I remember spending all summer at the pool- scabby noses from too much sunburn, lying on the hot cement to dry off, large bags of mixed lollies for five cents, and lunch was a hot dog and a couple of goes on the trampoline. The lime cordial snow cones were to die for! I remember some summers I would stay at the pool until the 9 pm closing time when mum would call the pool to tell me to come home over the loud speaker. Does anyone remember the Mudds? I thought Mrs Mudd was gorgeous and always wanted her blonde bee hive. Cobar wouldnt be Cobar without memories of Tony Russell and The Timekeepers. They played the same set of songs for years but it didnt matter. Wed spend weeks talking about the next school social and what wed be wearing. I remember Burgess Drinks and saving the bottles to get the 5 cent refund. Wed think nothing of driving three hours to Dubbo to do a big shop and drive back that night. I also will never forget Shirley Harbison- what a hard worker ! I loved getting out to Cable Downs with the sheep, dogs and playing elastics endlessly. Does anyone remember playing jacks with real bone knuckles? Ive told people over the years about the game of Quandongs but I think this a game unique to Cobar. The name Cobar might mean red dust but there is nothing dusty about the fond memories I have.
