Missions Update - Remember Niger A Dispatch from the Field by Kara VanderKamp - We arrived safely in Niger last Thursday. We were completely exhausted from our travels but went directly to a classroom at the Zinder school. The childrens excitement was contagious and we all really had fun. We were taking pictures for student sponsorship cards and the kids seemed to be constantly in motion! Thanks to donations given we are able to buy medical kits for the schools while we are here. We ran into a young friend named Houge when we were leaving the primary school. She is in her last year of middle school and has really blossomed. She first entered our sponsorship program in 2009. She dreams of being a doctor. Her grades, determination, work ethic, and newly found confidence all demonstrate that her dream is a real possibility! Houge received one of our scholarships at the end of her 6th grade year. She lost her father during her 5th grade year and her family did not have the means to pay for the additional school fees. Additionally, she had the top score in the region on her 6th grade exam. Were really pleased to see her excelling and would like her to go on to high school next year. Houges story is an exceptional one is Niger where less than 10% of girls go on to middle school and even fewer to high school. I am convinced that there are more girls like Houge in Niger - girls who would excel in education if given the opportunity. Sincerely, Kara VanderKamp (Remember Niger seeks to unify people and mobilize resources in order to provide quality educational opportunities in Niger. We partner and support leaders of the Evangelical Church of Niger who have a vision for a private schools system by which they hope to transform their country spiritually, socially, and economically. Each of them has been impacted and changed by Christian education and recognize its transformative power. They currently run primary schools in Ague, Tsibiri and Zinder.)
