Mitchs Adventure Walk: Hello there Kim! What a wonderful gift to give at such an important time! Thanks to you and your thoughtfulness I was able to get acquainted with the great Mitch at Richmond Animal Control Center due to your sponsorship for his Adventure Walk with Canine Adventure. Mitch surprised me! I thought he was going to be more hound then he was, but he turned out to have a lot of mastiff or some kind of terrier in him, and he was positively gorgeous! The first thing that I noticed about Mitch was the sign in front of his newly renovated kennel, that said, Easy to Train. Instantly I saw what they were talking about. A lot of dogs at shelters easily get stir-crazy and with good reason. While that may still be the case for our handsome pal Mitch, he is by far the most intelligent dog I have met or worked with at RACC in quite some time. He makes great eye-contact with his handler, which is great to know that he is eager to please his person. He learned quickly, an example being when we had some off-leash time at a often-abandoned dog park and were playing ball; he picked up on catch after a few short times and LOVED it. Hes a total cuddle-monster but has a fun side too, and his size is a good large. He could stand to gain some more weight; but let me also brag to you about the softest fur I have ever touched. That dog was simply amazing. Now on to our Adventure! So Mitch is an excitable guy, and while his enthusiasm was much appreciated (he gave me thank-you kisses!), it took us a few minutes to settle in the car. Once settled, we drove to Forest Hill to hike the steep trails and burn off some of that extra energy. Mitch proved to me that he was ready for the action and he loved being on the trail, not afraid to check anything out- including weird trees, squirrels, creek beds- pretty much the whole shabang. After we hiked the trail for half an hour, the slippery slopes were doing a number on us so we headed onto the wider footpaths around the park. I indulged in him watching some Geese, and he was very calm and eager to meet other puppies but we couldnt partake since we had to focus on the task at hand. After walking awhile I started to get him to walk at a heel besides me, and he was very attentive as to watch my face for a reaction. Whenever I knelt down he came right over for a cuddle. We took a break and I learned that he LOVES sticks and toys. He was stoked to play fetch with a branch and we played tug, and I had the idea to take him to the large dog park that no one ever uses by my house. We still had about half an hour left, and this was my favorite time with him. He was incredible at playing fetch, and I found that off-leash he has a tendency to stick close by. He is sweet and gentle, for a dog mixed with the mastiff breed, and if I had the living situation where I could take him home you better believe I would do it in a heartbeat! Thank you Kim for this chance to meet sweet Mitch. I plan on going back to RACC and spending more time with him soon. Im also going to try my hardest to find him a home. Hes a real winner and thanks to you I believe you opened up his window of opportunity. You are our hero! Mitch is available with Richmond Animal Care and Control.
