Modernism has taught people to abandon happiness in pursuit of fame, career, & wealth; it gives miserable people a false hope by calling it the pursuit of happiness. But the truly happy are those with the ability for contentment, and not those with the agility for pursuit. When Westerners visit our African Continent, they are usually appalled by the Continents general underdevelopment & gross poverty; but they are at the same time startled by our boundless, spirited happiness: they find it hard to make how a people mired in the repulsive mud of lack could at the same time swim in the pure waters of mirth. They cannot understand how our children, who, to them, are with big black bellies and tiny legs, in the midst of economic chaos, can afford the emotional comportment to jump, laugh and play in our streets. It is simple: we are more contented than they are. They with their home gadgets, Porsche cars, lofty buildings and medical advancement short of giving a second life, have become generally less happy than we who constantly borrow from them in an attempt to elevate ourselves to their status. Im yet to leave the shores of Africa, no, of Nigeria, but I can state with confidence, my habitual reading providing me that liberty, that our Continent is the most blessed with happiness of all the seven. We dont have tall buildings, but our happiness is towering above all else. But Modernism is here to convince us to demolish the castle of our happiness and with its blocks, build for ourselves the gigantic hotel of The pursuit of happiness, where we have a respectable place to sleep but not time to do so. May God save us from such respectability. Im not against development. I just dont think its wise to demolish our castle to build a hotel. Lets find a way so that both may co-exist. Implicit in Modernism is the idea of the abandonment of God and His values. If we dare that, then well become as miserable as Westerners. -Aondozungwe KK, the one whom Christ loves
