Moldova , officially the Republic of Moldova in January ( in Moldovan / Romanian : Moldova Republic of Moldova or just ) , is a landlocked country located in Europe, located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north , east and south . The land area is 33 843 km ² . Most of the territory is between its two main rivers, the Dniester and the Prut . It is just 100 km from the Black Sea . It has 4.4 million inhabitants ( 2007 ), most of it rumanófona ( 80%), broken down by the Moldovan census 75.8 % in 2004 to 2.2% Moldavians and Romanians . It also has sizable minorities of Ukrainians ( the largest minority in number ) and Russian . It declared independence with the same boundaries as the preceding Moldovan SSR in 1991 , as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union; however, a strip of territory internationally recognized as Moldovan , located on the east bank of the river Dniester , is under the de facto control of the breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990. The country is a parliamentary democracy with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government . Moldova is a member state of the United Nations , the Council of Europe , the World Trade Organization, OSCE , GUAM , the CIS , BSEC and other international organizations. Moldova currently aspires to join the European , Union 5 and has implemented the first three -year Action Plan within the European Neighbourhood Policy ( ENP) .6 About a quarter of the population lives on less two dollars per day .
