Shiva Kumar on his debut novel ‘Price Tag On Love’August 14, 2013 (178) Like | Unlike Shiva Kumar, currently working as a BizTalk Developer with the Netherlands Visa Information System (NVIS) Project, is enjoying the success of his first published novel Price Tag On Love. Shiva was born and brought up in Karnataka and is now settled in Mumbai. He is an engineering graduate from Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur and is extremely passionate about cricket. In a tete-a-tete with Talent India, Shiva shares his experience of writing his first book. Talent India (TI): Congratulations on your first book! Tell us something about Price Tag On Love. Shiva Kumar (SK): This is first time I am bringing my thoughts on to the book, fully inspired by numerous interactions with various individuals in every walk of life. Price Tag On Love is the story of a confident advocate who believes that he can never be wrong. But he nonetheless finds himself in a totally wrong situation and is seeking justice for a wrong person. He wants to redeem himself by finding out the truth. While investigating the client he is supporting, he realizes many facts about himself of which he was totally unaware before. He becomes more and more involved in the case while the story unfolds. The book discusses two important issues: First is that demanding, offering or accepting dowry is a wrong thing. And the second is that people should not judge other people on the basis of caste, race, religion etc. TI: Let’s talk about your journey as an author — when and how did the project start? SK: My Journey started two years ago when I had the idea of putting my thoughts on paper, but it took me some time to realize that I could write. The thought to write a book about dowry came from observation of today’s society where people consider dowry as a tradition, ignoring the fact that it is illegal. TI: How did you strike a balance between work and writing? SK: Keeping the balance between work and writing was and is very difficult. I had to work really hard to make this project successful. There had been many nights, where I slept only 3-4 hours, just because of the pure passion to write. Even though I didn’t have any deadlines for my book, I never took a break from it. I always kept writing. Shiva at the book launch TI: What were the challenges you faced while writing and how did you overcome them? SK: I faced many challenges; one of them was to stop pushing myself too hard. My hard work many times went against me. For example, I forcibly wrote for whole nights, only realizing the next morning that what I wrote didn’t even fit the context of the story. I had to rewrite it. TI: Did you have your managers’ / team members’ support with this? If so, how? SK: My manager and team members were initially unaware of this, but they were very happy when they came to know about it. They have wholeheartedly supported, encouraged and motivated me ever since. TI: Tell us about the book launch. Did your book have an official launch? SK: Yes, the book was officially launched on July 13, 2013 in Oxford Bookstore, Bangalore. The event went on for two hours. Kannada film actress Sukrutha Wagle was the special guest for the event. The event was a success, with good number of audience filled with family, friends and media authorities. TI: Who are your favorite authors and how have they inspired you? SK: My favorite authors are Chetan Bhagat, Amish Tripathi and Ravinder Singh. These people have inspired me by their dedication and passion for writing, and their ability to attract audience. TI: Where do you see yourself years from now as a writer? SK: I have not thought about it so far. I am taking things as they come. Currently, I am happy that I have successfully published my first novel. I am just hoping that people like it. Once I am done with this, I will focus on my second project. TI: Any advice for budding writers? SK: My only advice is to write what you have in your heart, and not think whether it is good or bad or right or wrong. People may or may not like your work. Don’t feel de-motivated. Keep writing. There is always a scope for improvement. Good luck!
