Monarch caterpillars are fun for children to raise. They make great school or family projects. If you find a few large caterpillars in your garden, remember that they can even be raised (for a few days) in a pizza box. These were placed in the box about three days before pupation. Fresh food was added every day. The top is removed from the box after they all pupated and the lid is hung where they can emerge with plenty of room to expand their wings. The bad part about a pizza box is that you cant see inside to watch them eat. Science projects have been done on Monarch butterflies thousands of times. Projects such as light difference, temperature different, species of milkweed differences ... there are dozens of project ideas.
