Monarchs back on track for finals -------------------------------------------------- Melbourne 17, Adelaide 14 at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide- Attendance: 14,020 Adelaide,SA- The Melbourne Monarchs needed to bounce back quickly after last weeks shock loss to the Parramatta Rams. They faced a tough opponent in the Adelaide Falcons but a win for the visitors would see them move up into 2nd spot and a home date with the Dolphins. Early on it looked like it was going to be a shoot out between the two quarterbacks and Andrew Mano got the first shot off when he went deep on a vertical route and Greg Little pulled down the bal for the 47 yard score. Melbourne had tried to get the run game going but the Falcons were dynamite upfront. Reggie Burton however began to distribute the ball around to his receivers and he set up a 15 play drive that was mostly passing. Tyrone Redman crashed ver from 4 yards out on a end run to the left. The Monarchs were in again not long later this time Burton found his fullback Shaun Bowles in the flat after an 8 play drive. Melbourne came out strong in the second half and put together a long drive but the Falcons were getting great pressure by both ends and Dunamis Grey shut down the series with his third sack of the game. Scott Lawrence landed the 31 yard field goal for the biggest lead of the game at 17-7. Melbourne were right on top and defensively they shut down the Falcons twice three and out. But the Monarchs began to hurt themselves and they allowed the Falcons right back in. A drive that reached the Falcon red zone was driven back by a sack and three holding penalties which forced a punt. It got worse on the next series when Burton tried a silly quick out to Sam Segayaro but Jacob Wood drove on the ball and took the interception all the way to the 1 yard line. Ray Tannous converted the field position with a sweep to the left and a walk in score. Melbourne were under real pressure now but the defense again was strong. The Falcons were twice stopped on downs to end the game and Melbourne had secured the 2nd seeding for the finals. “We are ready. It was important to win today to get the best seeding we could. You do not mess around with play offs” Ella said in response to some thoughts that Melbourne would have been better of to lose the game and in that way face the Diesels at home next week. “We now have the best chance to advance to the Brisbane game and that is the most important thing”.
