Monday 20 October 2014 Is it any wonder that the Ebola outbreak continues spreading? This is one legacy of endemic, deperate and unimaginable poverty. One report showed British nurses demonstrating to young children in Sierra Leone how to effectively wash their hands. What was absent in the demonstration was clean running water, soap and proper sanitation. These efforts are well intentioned but perversly set in the midst of very poor sanitary conditions and very low living standards caused by poverty. The more the wealthy nations of the world turn a blind eye to poverty and at the same time selfishly exploit the natural wealth of poor nations, without sparing a thought for the consequences of such exploitation, the more they will have to face up to epidemics and disasters such as these.
