Monday, 31 March 2014. Ugadi or Yugadi is one of the most important Hindu festivals which has derived its name from two Sanskrit words: Yug and Adi, meaning Age and New Beginning. Ugadi is celebrated on the first date of Chaitra month in Hindu calendar. The day on which it is celebrated is the start of the New Year as per the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is believed that it was on this day that Lord Brahma gave shape to the entire universe, including earth and the life which sustains within. Thats why Ugadi is the official New Year for people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. However, its celebrations are not just limited to these two states but extend to other states as well: Maharashtra, Punjab, Bengal, Assam, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Sindh province of Pakistan, though it goes by different names. While the people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh use the term Yugadi/Ugadi for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa (Marathi: गुढी पाडवा). Sindhis celebrate the same day as their New Year day Cheti Chand. Manipuris also celebrate their New Year (Sajibu Cheiraoba) on the same day. It is observed as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu. The eating of a specific mixture of six tastes called Ugadi Pachhadi in Telugu and Bevu-Bella in Kannada, symbolizes the fact that life is a mixture of different experiences (sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise) , which should be accepted together and with equanimity through the New Year. The special mixture consists of: • Neem Buds/Flowers for its bitterness, signifying Sadness • Jaggery and ripe banana pieces for sweetness, signifying Happiness • Green Chili/Pepper for its hot taste, signifying Anger • Salt for saltiness, signifying Fear • Tamarind Juice for its sourness, signifying Disgust • Unripened Mango for its tang, signifying Surprise. When you meet any Telugu people and want to wish them for Telugu New Year, you say Ugadi Shubhakankshalu - ఉగాది శుభాకాంక్షలు (Noothana Samvatsara Shubhakankshalu - నూతన సంవత్సర శుభాకాంక్షలు). In Kannada, the greeting would be Yugadi Habbada Shubhashayagalu - ಯುಗಾದಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಶುಭಾಷಯಗಳು (Greetings for the festival of Yugadi) or Hosa varshada shubhashayagaLu - ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದ ಶುಭಾಷಯಗಳು (Greetings on the new year). In Konkani, it would be Navve varsache shubhashyay, Samvatsar padvyachi shubheccha and In Marathi, it would be (Gudi padvyachya hardik shubhechcha).गुढी पाडव्याच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा Today is an annual account closing date and also the beginning of nine day long auspicious period of fasting and worshipping Goddess Durga, known as Navratri, ending on Ram Navami (8th April, 2014). Clear all our misunderstandings, hurt, anger, resentment, guilt, fears, rejections, failures, unforgiven, envy, misbehaviour, mistakes and all negative feelings. Close the old account and begin afresh. Wish u a blessed Navratri, Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, Cheti Chand, Hindu New Year 2071 & new financial year 2014-15........Parasar pant
