Monday, May 26, Americans across the country will celebrate Memorial Day. Originally called Decoration Day, this is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. First observed May 30 1868, this holiday began when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. This Memorial Day, I ask you to pause and reflect on the purpose of this holiday - to celebrate the lives and remember the ultimate sacrifice made by the hundreds of thousands who have died to defend the principles that make this nation so great. We should especially remember the enduring sacrifice of their families and loved ones left behind. This weekend also marks the unofficial beginning of summer. As school is either out or winding down, warmer weather prevails, and vacations begin, more people will be traveling across the country, enjoying summer time activities, and spending time at Corps lakes and waterways. This Memorial Day weekend, as well as all summer long, please be safe! Building Strong! Army Strong! MARGARET W. BURCHAM Brigadier General, USA U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division Commander For more info on the Corps water safety program, visit: watersafety.usace.army.mil/
