Monday Mini Movie Reviews. SAVING MR. BANKS. Disney Disneyfies (sanitizes) the story of a particularly unhappy and generally unpleasant woman who proves here that some writers just arent made for the collaborative art of screenwriting, especially after they have been spoiled by the Godlike yet hellish isolation of novel writing. But director John Lee Hancock has made a very entertaining movie out of Disneys effort to bring Traverss MARY POPPINS to the screen. Tom Hanks is his likeable self as Disney. Emma Thompson owns every scene shes in as the miserable Mrs. Travers. Of course, Im a huge Emma Thompson fan. If she appeared in P.L. TRAVERS MEETS ABBOTT AND COSTELLO, Id watch. You should watch, too. See it if only to hear Disney say to Travers at the critical moment, This is what storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We restore hope again and again and again. Theres truth in those lines. And theres truth in the movie (although P.L. Travers finally hated Disneys MARY POPPINS, even as she cashed the residual checks).
