Monday night sees the prestigious Grierson awards and I am very proud that a film I edited is in the final four in its category. However rather than being a celebratory moment, its just another reminder of where editors sit in the TV hierarchy. Because, a) the production co havent contacted me to tell me the film was even nominated (the director told me) and b) all the tickets they received have been allocated to people at the prod co. I could attend the ceremony by buying a ticket for £150, and my director, who appreciates my contribution to the finished film, has offered to pay part of it. For me, this is just another example of the invisibility of the editor. How often have you been sent a tx card without the editors name on it? Anyone else got any stories of ignorance and arrogance about the editors role?
