Monitoring progress through the analysis of grades has long been the norm, but how useful is it to know which books students have read, how often they come to class and when they contact their tutors? Universities need to consider the ethics underpinning the use of the data: should they target their resources at students who are performing badly at the expense of those who are doing well, for example?
