Monsanto has agreed to a settlement with the citizens of Nitro. After poisoning the citizens of Nitro, West Virginia with Dioxins over years, they settled to avoid a trial. Agent Orange, one of their signature herbicides, was produced in that town and the people have been poisoned over years. They shut the facility down in 2004 and it took them 10 years to agree to a settlement afterward. West Virginia’s State Journal reported this week that anyone who lived, worked or attended school in areas impacted by the dioxin contamination can now show up at the claims office and register in order to formally express their interest in receiving free medical monitoring or have their property cleaned-up. Terms of settlement: --$84 million to create a 30-year monitoring program -- $21 million towards initial testing for all citizens --$63 million if dioxin test results suggests more should be done --$9 million towards property clean-up efforts to be undertaken at cites still contaminated. Monsanto also plans on cleaning upwards of 4,500 homes in the area that were contaminated with dioxin dust. That procedure includes vacuuming carpets, rugs and accessible horizontal surfaces with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter vacuums, wet cleaning floors, floor vents, tops of doors and window moldings, interior window sills, ceiling fans, light fixtures and radiators. Do you trust a company like Monsanto to produce pesticides and tell us the truth about their effects on human health? Why?
