Month of the Sacred Heart The symbol of the Sacred Heart of Jesus so rich, expresses the true essence of the love of Our Lord for His Church. It is to such that he points to us and shows us how we can emulate him in making our hearts like his. If only would the world today embrace the depths of such a sacred heart would we come to appreciate God’s love for us and in turn know how we should love him and others as well. The eyes of faith draw us to see how the heart is the root of the cross. Like the roots at the bottom of a tree that provides it with the needed means to survive, so did the heart of our Lord provide him with the strength, perseverance and willingness to surrender himself on the cross and take upon himself the sins of the world. For if only were our hearts rooted in the cross and in Christ would we be willing like Him to endure all suffering in this life for the sake of His glory and the Kingdom and to come to appreciate with joyful and intense gratitude, that sacrificial love which saturated the cross with such precious blood which was shed for you and me. How could such a heart embrace such a cross? How could a king die for me with such love? It is only to see that crown of thorns surrounding the heart that we realize that it was not a crown of a king that propelled that heart to such love but a crown of a servant who didn’t come to be served but to serve those He loves and the will of His Father. That humbleness of heart to not think of wearing that which is of gold to glorify a heart but that of thorns to pierce it so that those precious drops of blood, the very source of His life would be poured out for many. What of our heart today, is it surrounded by things that edify ourselves or is it surrounded by thorns of compassion, mercy, love and forgiveness that would penetrate our hearts that we may be moved to loving our neighbor, our enemy, our poor, orphaned and widowed brothers and sisters. Finally, we see that burning flame that seems to connect the heart to the cross; the unquenchable fire that blazes perpetually with yearning desire. What about you and me? Has the flame of our love died? Has it become a pile of smoldering ash? Or does it consume us. Does it consume the bitterness, anger, hatred, selfishness, pride, and vanity that often consumes us instead? Today let us be imitators of His Sacred Heart. Let us be rooted in His sacrificial love, embrace the servant’s crown of virtue and allow it to penetrate us and let us be consumed by the flames of compassion and mercy. Amen
