Monticello Protests Echo D.C. Sentiment on Police Brutality By: Candace Dunkley MONTICELLO, N.Y. -- Large protests in D.C. and New York over the hotly debated issue of police tactics and brutality, trickled down to a community in the Hudson Valley on Sunday. There are problems everywhere with police brutality, everywhere, Gay Lee said. “Separation of powers. Anytime police are involved with in any type of shooting there should be a special prosecutor. Dozens hit the streets of Monticello, making a statement in solidarity with the thousands who marched in Washington, D.C., just 24 hours before. Grand jury decisions not to indict police officers involved in the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner have sparked lots of debate about policing tactics and race relations. Its a debate former Monticello Police Chief Douglas Solomon said is an important one. I think an important thing is dialogue I was big on that when I was here in Monticello. I think when I was here in Monticello I was able to improve race relations a great deal. from coast to coast this is a real serious issue and it has to be addressed, Solomon said. But current Chief Robert Mir said the department in Monticello has a good report with every part of the community, adding those relationships hinge on communication. We do have several mechanisms in place to address any problems, I have an open door policy anyone can see me anytime they feel like theyve been wronged we do have a local chapter of the NAACP that we work very closely with, Mir said.
