Montrose Street in Dubuque, just off Loras. This was the least - TopicsExpress

Montrose Street in Dubuque, just off Loras. This was the least dangerous of my routes home for 16 years, and it was a bad one!! When things were particularly slippery, and three of the four routes home were absolutely impassable, the only way to get home was 16th street. The west end of 16th is a dead end and goes uphill. The small section that goes east has an extremely steep hill. Cars line up on Catherine St. and wait while one car at a time gets on 16th. The driver on 16th backs westward, uphill about 100 feet, and then speeds up to about 35 mph to hit the bottom of the hill and get a running start eastward. On some days, its the only way to get into the neighborhood. The street next to Montrose (behind the fence in the picture) is Cornell. One morning I drove down Cornell in an ice storm, spun out of control, purposely spun the wheel to hit the wall, and slid down like a pinball, bouncing off of the walls on each side of the road. There was a man standing at the bottom, and I yelled why dont you go up and warn people! He replied, Are you kidding? Theres no way I can walk up this hill in this ice. Besides, watching you idiots bounce down this hill is hilarious!! At the same time, my wife Susan was falling off the hill on 16th.
