More clever than funny, Mortdecai is one of those movies if youve - TopicsExpress

More clever than funny, Mortdecai is one of those movies if youve seen the trailer youve seen the movie. Although admittedly the trailers are most about selling the name Mortdecai and Johnny Depps main characters mustache and it does look like there are clips and gags in them that arent in the movie. Watching the whole is maybe a bit like watching a Sunday afternoon of British comedies on public TV all played by American and only a few British actors. It does feature a good lineup - I thought Paul Bettanys character, who is Mortdecais manservant and thug was a surprising turn. All are in a quick witted, globehopping comedy heist movie, that maybe in the end is too cute, but still one for the grown-ups that get it. It all has a faux feel of those caper comedies from the 60s and screenwriter David Koepp, whos directing with this, mines that genre for whats forged here. The movies soundtrack really helps sell that stylistic steal too. Given the response this movie is getting this January dump weekend though, those that maybe are thinking about bringing back Austin Powers might want to hold off on that. Maybe the audience of today sees this as more fogey than funny. If this movie got you at the trailer youve probably already seen it. Everybody else, Mortdecai will probably steal your attention while youre in your own home, from the TV.
