More is caught than taught. Actions speak louder than words. Children will learn respect by your actions toward them. They learn what a healthy relationship looks like by you modeling healthy relationships, primarily with them. They learn mercy by watching you practice mercy, empathy by copying your empathy. Similarly, they can also learn disrespect and unhealthy relationship dynamics by your actions. You can shout respect! at them all day long, but if your treatment of them is disrespectful, it will not be your words that they internalize and follow. We teach character and respect by modelling it, we can also teach violence and disrespect by modelling it. What do our actions and treatment of our child-humans say to our children about themselves, about us, about life and relationships? Because I guarantee our actions will drown out any words we try to speak. I can try to tell them to respect me and others all day long, but if my actions toward them do not *show* respect, it will not be my words that they hear.
