More on the NSA leak: I feel sorry for Ed Snowden. He’s catching hell from both sides because of his extraordinary actions. I’ve heard him criticized for the leaking of top secret information, for “hiding” in Hong Kong, even for the fact that he is a high school drop-out! I think the guy is a national hero. He is well aware of the consequences for his actions – he signed the National Secrets Act for Pete’s sake. Further I don’t blame him for getting out of the country for some breathing space, though I certainly wouldn’t have chosen an area (Hong Kong) controlled by The Communist Chinese! And how pitiful is it that he is criticized for being a high school dropout? The fact that he attained the position he did clearly indicates that he is highly intelligent and was thoroughly vetted with government background checks prior to receiving his top secret clearance. Folks are just plain upset on both sides of the issue and they are grasping at straws to malign him. We’ve know for a long time that NSA was building a big installation in Utah. There have been “leaks” about that too. No big surprise there. But what is upsetting to so many is the fact that it has now moved from the arena of a conspiracy theory to that of fact. And don’t be certain in the least bit that we have all of the facts at this point. I doubt we ever will. I worked at NSA and am well aware of the half truths, deceptions, and downright lies that come out of that place. We were constantly warned about “shooting off our mouths” after the fact by correcting an erroneous media or official government statement. We were never to correct any of the lies and misstatements we heard made in the news. The Official Secrets Act hung over our necks like the sword of Damocles, as we were regularly reminded. So I’d question the statements coming out of any politician’s mouth more than usual here, especially from the lying lips of Mr. Obama. The whole damned Patriot Act was little more than a thinly-veiled attack on our civil rights to begin with. Even though it prevented the government from having to go through “due process” when dealing with terrorists, it is subject to terrible misuse. Who, after all, is to decide who is a terrorist (potential or otherwise)? If we’ve served in the armed forces, are practicing Christians, or believe in the Constitution, we’re already half way there in the eyes of the Obama administration. Obama himself has stated that the Constitution is outmoded. Remember his comments about some Americans, “…clinging to their guns and their religion,.” as though this were a bad thing? The passing of the Patriot Act was in fact the chief reason why I left the Republican Party to become an Independent. When did we become a nation of sniveling, frightened rabbits? This country never would have been built had a fraction of the whiners, whom we seem to have in abundance about us today, existed then. What corner did we turn – what cataclysmic event produced a nation full of milk sops who are full of the right to a paycheck, even if they don’t work, or the right to government-sponsored healthcare? I support Mr. Snowden. Whatever else one may say about him, he has the courage of his convictions and I believe he is right. He knows he will face unpleasant consequences, but has spoken out any way. Most of the politicians decrying his actions have little or none of his strength of conviction, their prime interest that of retaining office!
